Dream Planning – Mangawhai Heads

Dream Planning provides professional services in the field of Land Development, including Resource Management / Town Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architectural Design and Project Management.

Among the projects Smith Construction have worked on with Dream Planning is the Black House designer bach – a high performing modern 3 bedroom design inspired by container homes, situated on an elevated site overlooking Mangawhai Heads.  Go to case study

The architect for this project was Architectural Design Manager Francis (Frank) Stanton.

A key part of Frank’s role at Dream Planning is fostering close working relationships with experts in other disciplines including engineers, surveyors, landscape architects, contractors and planners.

Studio Pasifika – Carin Wilson

Carin Wilson from Studio Pasifika is better known for being a studio furnituremaker, sculptor and design educator. As leader in New Zealand’s craft movement in the 1970s, 80s and 90s he was one of the inaugurators of the design showcase Artiture in 1987.

Carin is a Fellow of the Designers Institute of New Zealand, and also a Licensed Building Practitioner.

Nick Smith worked with Carin Wilson when the designer was commissioned for a highly conceptual barn style home building project in 2014/2015.

The collaboration between builder and designer was a crucial element in the success of this project.

Smith Construction was involved early in the design process, working alongside Carin Wilson and the client to help transpose the conceptual elements of the design into the final drawings,   Go to case study

Rick Pearson- Pearson & Associates Architects

Pearson and Association Architects is a New Zealand based architectural practice renowned for their work in exhibition design.

Director Rick Pearson is the architect of many award winning projects including both architecture and exhibitions. Heprefers to take a personalised approach on all projects and has a strong team focus.

Working with Rick was an opportunity to prove our ability to deliver at all levels and provide valuable input for the execution of some of the more challenging design elements. The success of this project has put us in good stead for future work with Pearson and Associates. Go to case study

Architect: Jo Aitken – Atelier Aitken

Jo Aitken is the founding director of Atelier Aitken – an award winning architectural practice specialising in urban design with project experience in New Zealand, Europe, Asia and USA.

Atelier Aitken are known for design architecture that is at once pioneering and enduring, creating bespoke designs that are in context, both visually and environmentally, with their setting.

A registered practice with project experience in New Zealand, Europe, Asia and USA, Atelier Aitkenhave worked independently or collaboratively with other practices.

Jo Aitken is currently working on one such collaboration with architect John Irving, and for which Smith Construction is the project’s builder.

John Irving – Studio John Irving

Studio John Irving Limited is an independent architect practice based in Auckland. The business was established in 2004 by John Irving who had returned to New Zealand after 9 years working as an architect in Berlin and London.

John is building a strong portfolio of well-considered residential designs, created with an enduring appeal to look and feel right today and in the future.

Among his most recent designs, in collaboration with Jo Aitken from Atelier Aitken, is the Square House, currently being completed by Smith Construction.

The project is a fine example of how the design and build process is best achieved as one of collaboration and communication.  A case study for this project will be published following its completion later in 2016.

Jonathan Boersen – Structure Design

Engineer Jonathan Boersen from Structure Design was also involved in the Square House project. Structure Design is a well-established structural design practice with a strong portfolio of design work ranging from iconic commercial buildings through avant-garde residential designs and on to large sculptural works.

At the heart of Structure Design’s success are the relationships with New Zealand’s construction and architectural community, many of which stretch back for decades. The company has worked with many of New Zealand’s leading architects and been involved in numerous award winning projects.

Jonathan Boersenspecialises in high end residential buildings and has been responsible for designing multiple award winning homes. Jonathan enjoys pushing boundaries to help people realise their aesthetic goals, and working with the finer architectural detailing to deliver complex structures.

Independent timber merchants ITM supply the majority of building materials for Smith Construction’s projects. They have proved themselves time and again their reliability of service and supply and we can be confident in their delivery of the right materials when we need them to keep projects on schedule.


Hermpac are NZ’s leading manufacturer and supplier of specialty timber products including quality cedar and hardwoods. We work closely with Herman Pacific to create special run and profiled boards as required for creating a high end finish using timber features.

Nu Wall

Nu-Wall produces an extruded aluminium weatherboard system designed and developed in New Zealand. It is manufactured locally and offers a wide range of profiles and factory-applied colours, making it a strong choice of cladding for creating a unique design.
