The Dune House

The Dune House, conceived as a spacious one-bedroom dwelling with a modular expansion, integrates seamlessly with its harsh, windswept landscape. Embracing simplicity and durability, the design features a blend of natural textures and modernist lines. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a monolithic brick structure with a cedar door that seems to meld with the surrounding grasslands. Inside, panoramic glass walls offer breathtaking views of the dunes, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.Inspired by Danish architects renowned for their use of honest materials, the house employs brick for its resilience and thermal properties. Careful placement of windows harnesses natural light, enhancing the interior ambiance. The result is a serene retreat that harmonizes with its surroundings, offering both comfort and a profound connection to the ever-changing landscape.

Entering into the private driveway, a monolith of submerged brick seems to also rise from the grasslands. A full-height cedar door, with bespoke bronze handle, is sunken into curved brick walls that draw you in.

“Smith Construction have a reputation of integrity in the district for good reason.  Nick Smith provided input to our architect on buildability in the Concept through to Detailed Design stages.  We were so reassured by his pragmatic and professional approach that we entered into a Cost Plus contact.  Throughout our 18 month build we have maintained an open and honest relationship.  The entire build has benefited from Smith Construction’s focus on detail, planning, record keeping and sustainable practices.

Post construction Nick has responded positively to any issues, with a concerted effort to complete the project to our high expectations.”
